Abstract:

This chapter provides an overview of the dual purpose of Higher Education (HE), i.e. to both prepare students for the workforce and also to nurture their intellectual development. It outlines the key role of doctoral supervisors in providing support, and the UK Council for Graduate Education’s Good Supervisory Practice Framework is introduced as a structured guide to enhance supervisory standards. Each chapter in the book is discussed in turn, addressing different aspects of doctoral supervision, and summarising case studies across a range of topic areas that link to the framework’s 10 overarching criteria.
