Biography

I have been on the academic staff at Bournemouth University since 2012, where I established a Computational Neuroscience Lab.

After my PhD and a post-doc in time series analyses with Profs Secundino del Valle (Biology Faculty, University of Valencia) and Emilio Soria (Intelligent Data Analysis Institute, University of Valencia); I was post-doc with Prof Sue Denham (Cognition Institute, University of Plymouth, 2005-2008), developing models of auditory processing. From 2009-2012 I was first post-doc and then project leader at the Bernstein Centre for Computational Neuroscience (University of Heidelberg) working with Prof Daniel Durstewitz; my research focused on the reconstruction of neural dynamics in ensemble recordings.

Current projects in the computational neuroscience lab include models of top-down auditory processing, algorithms for understanding frontal cortex dynamics and analyses of trial-to-trial variability in decision making and emotional processing among others. Research

Some of the research directions in the Computational Neuroscience Lab are:

-Neurocomputational modelling of human auditory system using electro- and magneto- encephalography , in collaboration with Andre Rupp (Heidelberg University) and previously with Sue Denham (Plymouth University) and Ray Meddis (Essex University). We focus in the analysis of top-down interactions from auditory cortex to brainstem during the perception of pitch and timbre of sounds. This research helps to a future better understanding of auditory central processing disorders.

-Neural dynamics reconstruction from in-vivo neural recordings, in collaboration with Maria Victoria Sanchez-Vives (IDIBAPS Barcelona), Chris Lapish (Indiana Purdue University) and previously with Daniel Durstewitz (Heidelberg University), Jeremy Seamans (University of British Columbia) and James Hyman (University of Nevada). In our current projects, we develop innovative analysis tools for the reliable identification of the dynamical processes (such as attracting dynamics) underlying decision-making and trial-to-trial variably. These are fundamental goals and currently the focus of spirited debates in systems neuroscience.

-Other multidisciplinary projects in the lab include fMRI and EEG studies in cognitive control, apathy, emotional and interpersonal processing in collaboration with Drs Ben Parris, Xun He, Anna Troisi, Darren Linneker and Alain Renaud (Bournemouth University); previously we have also collaborated in fMRI studies in hyperactivity disorders with Prof Peter Kirsch (University of Heidelberg)...
