Biography

I have been on the academic staff at Bournemouth University since 2012, where I set up a Computational Neuroscience Lab.

After my PhD in time series analyses with Profs Secundino del Valle (Biology Faculty, University of Valencia) and Emilio Soria (Intelligent Data Analysis Institute, University of Valencia); I was in an industrial secondment in the Artificial Intelligence group at the IT company TISSAT for nearly four years. Then I was post-doc with Prof Sue Denham (Cognition Institute, University of Plymouth, 2005-2008), developing models of auditory processing. From 2009-2012 I was first post-doc (2009-2010) and then project leader (2010-2012) at the Bernstein Centre for Computational Neuroscience (University of Heidelberg) working with Prof Daniel Durstewitz; my research focused on the reconstruction of neural dynamics in ensemble recordings.

Research

Some of the research directions in our Computational Neuroscience Lab include:

o Modelling mesoscopic responses of the human auditory cortex during the perception of sounds. In this area, I collaborate with Andre Rupp (Heidelberg University) and Sue Denham (Plymouth University); and previously with Ray Meddis (Essex University). We focus on the analysis of top-down-bottom-up interactions during the perception of pitch and timbre. These basic science projects are helpful, for instance, for a future better understanding of auditory central processing disorders.

o Cortical network dynamics in-vivo and in-vitro, in collaboration with Maria Victoria Sanchez-Vives (IDIBAPS, University of Barcelona) and Ruben Moreno-Bote (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona). Previously, I collaborated with Daniel Durstewitz (Heidelberg University), Christopher Lapish (Indiana Purdue University), Jeremy Seamans (British Columbia) and James Hyman (University of Nevada). In our projects in this area, we develop approaches for understanding the neuronal dynamics underlying default cortical activity states and decision making. These are fundamental questions in neuroscience which, in addition, provide the basis to future projects on discerning normal from altered brain dynamics.
