Abstract:

This chapter presents four case studies focused on supporting doctoral students through the final stages of their degrees. Riches-Suman, Graham, and Paluch explore how flexible and compassionate supervision can support students facing health issues and external disruptions. Roushan reflects on adaptive supervisory approaches that highlight the value of structured support, mental health awareness, and professional development. O’Sullivan and Polkinghorne emphasise the emotional toll of completing a doctorate, calling for greater institutional support to ease transitions and address post-PhD challenges. Mallan, Kaur, and Bakar examine viva voce examination preparation in different national contexts, indicating how supervisors can equip students with the skills and confidence needed for successful oral defences. Together, these case studies underscore the importance of empathetic and structured supervision to guide doctoral students through the complexities of completion and beyond.
