Biography
Stuart originally graduated from Bournemouth University in 2002 with a BA Honours Degree in Scriptwriting for Film and Television. After a change in career in 2009 Stuart returned to Bournemouth University to become a Paramedic and graduated from the FdSc Paramedic Science course with a Distinction in 2012. Stuart has worked as a Paramedic for both Southwestern Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWAST) and South-Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) in full-time and bank positions as a Band 6 Paramedic. Stuart secured a full-time Lecturing position with the University of Portsmouth in 2015. During his time at the University of Portsmouth Stuart taught BSc Paramedic Science students. With interests in technology enhanced learning (TEL) and simulation Stuart sought to integrate teaching technologies and was a lead in innovation and technologies. In April 2018 Stuart became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Senior Lecturer on the BSc Paramedic Science course at the University of Portsmouth...
In January 2020 Stuart moved to Bournemouth University to take up the position of Lecturer on the BSc Honours Paramedic Science program where he has worked with the team to integrate learning technologies across the course. During the Covid-19 pandemic Stuart used his expertise to help embed many different learning technologies into the curriculum due to the urgent need to conduct distant learning. He has continued to develop this role for creating TEL content across all years of the degree including the creation of; podcasts, video lectures, skill-set videos, interactive quizzes, course marketing and promotional material, and simulation. In 2022 Stuart won an Innovation Teaching Award at BU for his work with TEL and received two “Your Brilliant Awards” from Students for the use of innovation as part of his Unit delivery.
Stuart has experience working and teaching across levels 4, 5 & 6, and has been a Personal Tutor to students across all three levels where he takes his pastoral support very seriously. Currently Stuart is the course lead for delivering resuscitation across Level 4 (Basic Life Support and Primary Survey patient assessments) and Level 5 (Advanced Life Support for both adults and paediatrics). As a passionate Paramedic Lecturer resuscitation, advanced life support and pre-hospital emergency care are areas in which Stuart is particularly interested in. Stuart prides himself on student engagement through using innovative teaching methods and has successfully adapted and run two units where he has delivered an innovative way of teaching pre-hospital care and resuscitation. Comfortable with traditional teaching methods, Stuart has also fused two units that embraced team-based learning and the “Flipped-Classroom” pedagogies through the development of TEL and integrated theoretical learning with enhanced simulation and scenario-based practical learning.
In 2021 Stuart also became the Admissions Tutor for the Paramedic Science course where he oversees the recruitment of candidates that apply to the Paramedic Science course. As the course Admissions Tutor Stuart has overseen changes to the recruitment processes including designing an innovative group interview, interview questions and open day presentations.
Stuart currently holds a Bank Paramedic contract with SCAS and is a member of the Collage of Paramedics.
