Biography
Dr Tahani Mohamed is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting, Finance and Economics in the Business School and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). She is a researcher in public finance, taxation and sustainable economic policy whose work explores how fiscal systems, financial governance and public institutions can support inclusive, resilient and sustainable economic development.
Her research examines the design and impact of taxation, fiscal policy and governance in addressing major societal challenges, including climate change, public wellbeing, sustainable growth, responsible business, environmental sustainability and post-conflict reconstruction. Drawing on accounting, economics and public policy, she investigates how evidence-informed fiscal policies can promote economic prosperity while balancing social equity and environmental responsibility.
Her research interests include public finance, tax policy, carbon pricing, environmental taxation, sustainable finance, ESG, corporate governance, responsible investment and economic development... She is particularly interested in translating academic research into practical policy recommendations that support governments, businesses and international organisations in designing effective fiscal and financial systems.
Before joining academia, Dr Mohamed held senior finance, accounting and governance roles within multinational organisations and international development, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Alcatel-Lucent and professional accountancy practice. This experience enables her to bridge academic research with real-world challenges in financial management, governance and institutional reform.
She completed her PhD at Bournemouth University, where her doctoral research examined the relationship between corporate tax minimisation, corporate governance and firm value among FTSE 350 companies. Her current research programme has expanded to explore fiscal reform, sustainable public finance, public wellbeing and the role of taxation in supporting resilient economies.
Dr Mohamed is committed to producing research with practical and policy relevance. She actively engages with policymakers, industry, professional bodies and international organisations through collaborative research, knowledge exchange and policy dialogue. Her recent engagement includes contributing to discussions on public finance, sustainability, gambling harms, economic governance and development policy.
She is the founder and academic lead of SPROUT (Sustainability Postgraduate Research Opportunities and University Transformation), an interdisciplinary research community that supports postgraduate researchers, early career researchers and academic staff through collaboration, mentoring and research culture initiatives across UK universities.
Alongside her research, Dr Mohamed teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules in taxation, accounting, financial management, public finance, sustainability and corporate governance. She is committed to developing graduates with strong analytical, ethical and critical thinking skills who understand the wider economic, social and environmental responsibilities of finance and public policy.
She also contributes to doctoral supervision, curriculum development, external examining, peer review and interdisciplinary research leadership. Dr Mohamed welcomes opportunities to collaborate with researchers, governments, international organisations, businesses and policy institutes on projects relating to taxation, fiscal policy, sustainability and economic development. Her work aims to strengthen the connection between academic research, public policy and practice to support evidence-informed decision-making and long-term societal impact. She is building an international research profile through interdisciplinary collaboration, policy engagement and knowledge exchange to advance evidence-informed solutions to global fiscal.
