Biography
Dr Uma Patel teaches on the Postgraduate Certificate in Education Practice. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HEA. Her research is in technology-enriched learning and emerging construction of equity and social justice in technology design, pedagogy and the wider context of education. Her work is informed by science and technology studies and socio-material discourse analysis in the work of Foucault, Latour and Law.
In her early career she was a schoolteacher and then head of humanities in a London comprehensive school. In 1990 she moved into Human-Computer Interaction Design research in various technical roles. At the turn of the century she combined her interest in education and technology by entering the (then) new field of Technology Enhanced Learning. This led her into various roles progressing to Programme Director for different Education and Technology postgraduate programmes and related research projects. For example:
• Personalisation of Learning and exploration of researchers as learners...
• Ensemble—Semantic technologies for enhancement of Case-based learning,
• Space Awareness Project evaluating the value of mobilising the excitement of space science to engage young people in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
• Youth Equity STEM project which investigated tools for supporting more equitable and social justice systems for STEM access and participation.
Uma has degrees in social science, software engineering and a postgraduate certification in education. Her Doctorate (2015) was an archival study entitled 'Technology Enhanced Learning Research (1945-2012)'.
Like many first-generation African Asian immigrants, she has benefitted from the post-war grants which funded her University Education, research council grants which funded her conversion path into software engineering and an international scholarship that funded her PhD.
Her identity as an academic and citizen is tied to the three pillars of democracy i.e. ‘fairness, dignity and equality’. ‘Fairness’ because the student experience, depends on it. ‘Dignity’- because learning is complex and difficult as well as powerful. ‘Equality’ as in equal access to resources but also equity as in ‘levelling the playing field’. In practice these values are in tension and capture something of the research and education challenges that socio-material scholars ( and others) articulate and conceptualise.
