Biography
Dr Rehan Zia holds a practice-led PhD in photography/visual effects craft practice. Rehan has been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) – the highest level of RPS distinctions – as well as the Fellowship of the Royal Society for Arts (FRSA). Rehan is also an Unreal Virtual Production Fellow and a certified Nuke Trainer.
Visual storytelling lies at the core of Rehan’s creative practice, teaching and research. He has a passion for telling stories through light, form and colour, creating images that lie on the cusp of fantasy and realism.
Rehan teaches a wide range of visual effects, photography and camera acquisition related courses at the Bournemouth University’s prestigious National Centre for Computer Animation in the UK.
These courses include practice areas such as camera acquisition, visual storytelling, previsualisation, cinematography, compositing, matchmoving, digital texturing and lighting, project management and photography for visual effects, computer animation and games... Rehan has a keen interest in course design and has delivered a number of talks on best practice in teaching visual effects and computer animation for The Creative Skillset (now known as ScreenSkills).
He has exhibited work at a number of group and solo exhibitions and his images have been published in print and on the BBC.

Best Practice in Teaching Creative Arts and Media, Fatima Jinnah University for Women, Rawalpindi, 03 Jan 2020 more
From STEM to STEAM: This presentation and following discussion focussed on the importance of integrating art, design, science and technology to enable a more balanced, comprehensive and engaging curriculum. The marriage of art and science: The philosophy of “technology in the service of the arts” has been instrumental in making the NCCA a world recognised department. This presentation focussed on the best practices in teaching that have been pioneered at the NCCA and have been adapted by other institutions and facilities in arts, media and technology. Developing and modular course structure and curriculum: This presentation and discussion focussed on the more traditional as well as open modular course structure and curriculum design. The key advantages and disadvantages of traditional and modular course structures will be discussed as well as highlighting best practices for options, pre/co-requisites and managing student numbers. Best practices in creative arts and media production course delivery: Best practices in teaching and assessment for art and media workshop based courses will be discussed that maximise student numbers without compromising the educational value or the student learning experience. Practice-led research: Practice-led PhDs have become increasingly popular in arts and media practice and arguably add more value in teaching given the practice element that can link directly to the teaching and delivery serving as examples and case studies. This presentation introduced practice as research and reflective/reflexive practice as an alternative to the more traditional PhD research model and highlight the advantages and limitations of this type of PhD research. Synergies of research, practice and teaching: This concluding session focussed on how research, professional practice and teaching can be fused together to add greater value to each of these individual areas. -
Photography and Visual Effects Workshop, Fatima Jinnah University for Women, Rawalpindi, 01 Jan 2020 more
The workshop will start with providing students a historic and technical overview of the still image and deconstruction of light in classical and contemporary artworks. The workshop will build on the lighting techniques used by classical and contemporary artists and explore lighting techniques used in various photography genres. A hands-on demonstration of different studio and outdoor lighting techniques will follow providing insights into the tools, methods, techniques and workflows used in high level professional photography and postproduction practice. Multi-shot photography techniques will be demonstrated alongside critique and advice based on the artist’s own work as well as the works of other contemporary photographers. The workshop will conclude with a discussion around legal, ethical, and, health and safety issues. The style of delivery will be informal with participants encouraged to ask questions any time during the workshop. The participants will also actively engage in setting up different photography lighting setups and the photography process. The workshop will start with a historic overview of computer animation and visual effects followed by an overview of the tools, methods, techniques, processes, workflow and pipeline used in computer graphics production. The workshop will encapsulate the entire computer graphics film production pipeline starting with planning and previsualisation techniques followed by image acquisition, matching computer generated artefacts with live action footage and seamlessly compositing elements to create photorealistic imagery. The workshop will be quite intense; however, participants will be encouraged to ask questions during delivery. The style of delivery will be informal. -
