Biography

Dr Sharon Docherty is a Principal Academic within the Faculty of Health, Environment and Medical Sciences. As a highly experienced academic, she has delivered excellence in research and education across a range of health and life science disciplines. Since completing her PhD, she has spent over 20 years applying her scientific knowledge and research design skills to the field of health as a researcher, educator, leader and mentor.

Educationally, Sharon has delivered research training for students across different health disciplines at all levels of their Higher Education journey. She has also supervised several students through to successful completion of their PhD.

Having completed four rounds as a member of the NIHR Pre-Doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship (PCAF) Funding Panel, Sharon is now a member of the NIHR Doctoral Award Funding Committee. This role involves reviewing applications from a wide variety of health and care professions as part of the national panel involved in funding recommendations.

Research

Drawing on her foundations in biological sciences and advanced quantitative methodological capabilities, as well as working with colleagues from a variety of academic and clinical specialities, has provided Sharon with an understanding of the importance of multidisciplinary teams. This has led to a track record of successful outcomes as evidenced through the delivery of National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded clinical trials working with colleagues from NHS Trusts as well as academic institutions such as Exeter, Bristol and Southampton universities.

As well as contributing to the design and analysis of clinical trials, Sharon is interested in how possible changes to systems involved in the perception of visual vertical (visual, vestibular or proprioceptive), or areas of the brain linked with processing the information, can result in increased perceptual errors. Her work has encompassed studies related to health and wellbeing across the lifespan ranging from the influence of physical activity on development in children through to whether errors in perception are increased in people with Parkinson’s Disease. As a result, she has published extensively across a wide range of journals covering different disciplines and representing local and international collaborations.
