Biography
Professor Rob Middleton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip replacement procedures. He works in the National Health Service (NHS) at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and at Poole Hospital where he is Director of Trauma. He also works privately at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital and The Harbour Hospital, Poole.
Professor Middleton is recognised both nationally and internationally for his work. In 2008 he was appointed as the National Clinical Lead in hip and knee replacement at the NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement. In this role he specialises in the development of enhanced recovery techniques for patients which enables faster recovery and better outcomes from surgery. He is also a highly active researcher and has worked on the development of new techniques in orthopaedic surgery for the last fifteen years. This work has led to his appointment as a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University.
At Bournemouth University he is Professor of Orthopaedics and Head of the Orthopaedic Research Institute... Having always been involved in research and improvement in Orthopaedics, it has been a long term aim of Professor Middleton’s to introduce the benefits of robotic surgery to patients. His first publication on the subject was back in 1994. With the introduction of the Mako Robotic Assisted Hip Replacement into clinical practice in 2017, he is now one of the most experienced surgeons in this field in the UK.
